City Diaries
What can you do if you had 24 hours to visit a city? Well, I know what I would do first above anything. I would eat all the food I could get my hands around. LOL, I am just kidding. But whenever I can hit the road, I love to find hidden gems to visit and try new foods and adventures.
It doesn't matter if I in my city of Texas or visiting my hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana, I can always find good food and family fun.
Over the weekend, we decided to hit the road heading down south to Shreveport, and it was all about seeing family, friends, and eating.
Note: Most people that visit this city know it is known for the casinos and big smiling friendly people. Seriously, you can't go into a store or visit anyone without feeling right at home. Yes, I know I live in the fast pace of Dallas, but I can not shake the countryside chick that is in me.
Now on this trip, we had to stop before visiting anyone on our list. My first stop was at Retro 521 Coffee, Cafe And Venue. Oh my goodness, you would have to live under a rock to miss this hidden gem, and I mean its tucked away yet in plain sight.
Upon arrival, I thought I was going into a cute little boutique and gift shop.
I couldn't get passed all the jewelry and the antique feel and vibe of the place. I had to walk around and view every inch of the area. It was the cutest little place to sit down and have a latte or coffee.
When I visit new places, I want to go where the locals go because that is where the good stuff is hidden. And I am a person who prefers good eats and drinks that are quick because I am always on the go. When I got to this place, I wanted to sit down with my husband and chat it up as if we were back in college.
Retro 521 gave me that good feeling, and I couldn't believe how the style of service was off the chart. That is why this place had to make my city diaries list as a great place to eat and visit. Hands down, I am not feeding you fluff at all. Put this one stop on your bucket list because you will not be disappointed.
Also, did I mention this was my 16th anniversary weekend, and I couldn't have asked for a better romantic morning?
I ordered the Lemon Lavender Cake Slice with Lavender Hot Tea; that they serve in a little tea kettle. My husband and I decided to sit in one of their private vintage style rooms.
I am so glad this was on my list of things to do when I hit the city, and I will be adding this one to my every stop when In town.
Last but not least, there are three things I look for when visiting places that will determine if I return or tell anyone about it.
They must be Friendy, Family Hospitable, and Have Good Service.
And after spending two hours in this place dancing with my husband, playing the piano and enjoying a good breakfast cake I was hooked, line and sinking.
So, when in the Shreveport, Bossier area stop in Retro 521 and let them know I sent you.
Some other places I had to visit:
John's Seafood off North Market in Shreveport. They have the best and biggest pieces of fried catfish and shrimp this side of the swamp. And it is all under 10 dollars, and yall I can not get enough.
It is no secret I love to eat, and seafood is always my first choice. So, you know I couldn't leave the city without grabbing Beaux Jax.
Beaux Jax is one of Bossier's newest hot spots, and I am glad I made my way to this place. If I could eat only one thing, it would be there signature Boudin with crackers. I can best describe Beaux Jax as a quick cajun restaurant that has a New Orleans type of vibe.
I couldn't resist the mac and cheese with shrimp and crawfish. Yes, I love seafood and cheese, that's my weakness. Beaux has mastered a combination that satisfied my cravings all the way back home to Texas.
The last thing I tried was their signature shrimp po boy that had coleslaw on it.
There is not much more I can say, except I am glad I added this to my food list to try.
Last but not least, before leaving the town. The hubs and I decided to have a nightcap to wind down. So, we decided to visit our best friend Quincy at Jimmy's Seafood and Steakhouse at Margaritaville casino.
We chose to eat and drink something a little light. But I was happy with my decision after ordering a chocolate ganache cake.
And can you believe I still made room to try the bread pudding and ice cream my husband ordered? By the time we left Jimmy's, we were full of food, fun, and laughter.
Now, who can resist visiting a city with those top three outstanding qualities?
There you have it, another city diaries guide from the pages of my life.
