My Unproductive Routine: These Are Not Proven Tips Proceed With Caution!
Morning Babbles
This may sound a bit wonky, but do you schedule a day of doing nothing? You know just a day of sleeping in late or not bathing until its time to go back to bed?
No, seriously I have days where I want to do nothing but lay on the sofa, watch Netflix and eat vanilla bonbons all day.
Honestly, I am waiting to become a real empty nester in about 15 more years and trust me. I am counting down the days, minutes, and seconds.
It's almost frightening to be asking anyone if it's ok to be unproductive on your days off from work, school, etc.
We are only 5 weeks into 2019, and most people I know are trying to find ways to be productive.
For the most part, my friends and I work long hours, and when we're off, we want to do nothing except relax. So, I thought it would fun to share how to be unproductive without being unapologetic.
Disclaimer: I am not promoting being a lazy couch potato, but hey if you need to sit your tush down, by all means, do so.
I was thinking on the other day about life and the things I want to do that do not require work, paying bills or dealing with any real-life stuff. Since I know I can be lazy regularly, I thought about scheduling my own unproductive routine. One that fits my lifestyle and one that gives me the flexibility to enjoy my days off without always being a busy body. So, I thought it would be fun to share my routine with you guys.
I never made a New Year New Me resolution because I wanted to try something out for myself and I will tell you guys all about that later.
Over the last few weeks of the year, I have been trying out a new routine, and I love it. I decided I can write my own story to life, and I know it does not have to be overbearing or always not being fulfilling.
The things I've discovered over the last few months have been mind-renewing and thought-provoking.
Question: What is life, and what does it mean to you? What is your purpose, do you have goals?
Once I realized my purpose, I became diligent in the pursuit of my goals.
No matter what is going on in life, I am learning to schedule a time for me to regroup and start a few things over. It took me many years to realize life is not that complicated, and I am the captain of my ship when it comes to inner happiness.
So, once a week, I have been giving myself permission to let go and live life a little bit. I can not believe how easy it was to really take care of myself, and I do not feel guilty. This may not be for everyone, but it can serve as a real guide to really having a scheduled self-care day.
Being unproductive really does mean (Do Nothing) getting your nails done or walking the dog is taking away from your time to be a lazy, funky midlifer for one day or even one moment.
- Do Not Get Up Early: I know this is hard because I am an early bird every single day. Due to having kids, I have to most days. So, I started pre-packing my youngest lunch the night before, and I make sure all clothes are laid out. I do not cook breakfast on the day I chose to be lazy. Honey, it's all about cold cereal and packaged oatmeal, and quite frankly, I do not feel bad about it.
- Tell Your Family About Your Plans: Let the spouse, kids, and the dog knows there will be no dinner cook by you today either. Now I know the fam has to eat, so prepare early. If you are struggling with a quick menu, allow me to help you out. Fish stick, tater tots, and corn, or sandwiches, chips, and a coke. This is adult-friendly, and trust me no one will die if you are not in the kitchen cooking a ten-course meal.
- Do Not Make Coffee At Home: My favorite part of being unproductive is I am going out to drink and eat all the goodies I want on my day. Seriously, don't feel guilty about rolling up on the circle k and grabbing a $1 coffee or going to lunch by yourself and eating all the bad stuff on the menu. Being ok is ok.

- Plan Something Doable and Enjoyable: Here's the deal I try to focus on things that do not require me to get overwhelmed or spend a lot of money. It is not relaxing if I am out and about shopping for groceries or trying to buy the family something. So, I love to find a corner thrift store and hang there for hours. Yes, I always end up buying something, but it will be for me. Also lately I've been packing myself a few snacks and hanging out at my local cute book store. Those two things can be done, and they are enjoyable to me. I get to walk around and look at weird objects without anyone calling my name. Now that's taking life slow and easy.
- Give Yourself Permission To Wander: It's ok to not think about the real world for a moment, sometimes I like to walk by the lake that is close to my home. It frees my mind so I can relax and enjoy breathing fresh air at that moment.
- Doodle A Little: It's ok to have dreams or start something over again. Sometimes I have to write things down so I can execute what I want to even in my golden years. When I doodle on paper, I find fresh new ideas that have helped enhance my life.
- Let Go And Do Something Different: Find a new hobby or something that no one understands but you. Set some new goals and intentions. Clean out your social media, start following positive people who help you see the greater good in life.
- Time Block: In other words, block out the time needed for you to get rejuvenated and feel alive for the rest of the week. Most of us have a list of daily things to do every day, go to work, pick up the kids (yadda yadda). It is never-ending, and it will never end. If we as the person who is doing all the moving, never stop and take focus.
At the end of the day, we only have one chance to take care of ourselves by living a meaningful life that can be happy and full of joy. So, take one day, minute or hour to be unproductive. It will surely add a few more years to your well-being in life.
In conclusion: Can we talk about this cute little vintage handbag I purchased from the thrift store. Yes, it is a bit ugly, but I will be adding a few lace pieces and pearls to it myself. I can never go thrifting at not buy something, that is my weakness, and I love looking for bargains.
There you have it my unproductive routine that I do advise you proceed with caution:) This is all about aging gracefully and living a simple and fulfilled life.
Have you tried any of these things? Leave suggestions for things I should try?
