Thrift Bits And Favorites That Added Charm To Our Home Space!
One question that I receive all the time is, how do I find pieces that will look amazing in my space? And how do I clean most of the items I buy second-hand? Well, today, I am going to share a few of my most recent finds and the low down dirty truth about buying used stuff.
Let's be honest. I love to shop and buy things that look fabulous on a budget. What I love most about thrifting is I can find something to wear and decorate my home. But, I must admit there is a trick to all the madness when it comes to shuffling through other people's trash. Just know there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it will become a good treasure find if done right.
When Rico and I decided to spruce up our home, the kitchen was where we started first. I knew I wanted to decorate the top part are of our cabinets. I started looking at plants and big pictures but later started collecting old tin cans. Although adding plants would have added a family charm to our place, adding rusty tin cans added a vintage vibe. I've been collecting vintage cans and tins for about a year now. The prices range from $1 to way above $20, which is a bit steep when shopping second-hand. I look for pieces that have the original stamp and date of the company. Just recently I stumbled across a limited edition Quaker Oats tin can, After proper negotiations with the vendor, I scored it for $3 bucks. Then I bought the Ritz can, and a few other items that I know will have lots of value later on in life.
One of my favorite buys were the Jersey Cream Butter Cookies, which were my favorite as a kid. I must admit decorating with thrifted tin cans can really add a vintage character to any space.
How I clean my can once I get them home. I use hot soap and water, then I scrub, inside and out before polishing with a little oil.
In my latest apartment reboot post, I shared a thrift picture of Jimmi Hendrix. Hands down, this has to be my best find to date.
For the last few years, I've been looking for a coat rack, and I have had no luck at all. But on my previous thrift snooping trip, I fell upon an iron rack with seating, and it was black with a yellow seat that matched our weird home style to a tee. Yes, I screamed because I scored this baby for 35 dollars. Yes, that was steep, but it has character, and it is incredibly sturdy, so I was sold.
Usually, I take my items to our local carpet and upholstery steamer, but this time I decided to clean and disinfect myself. First Rico, cleaned all the iron from top to bottom, the sprayed the set with Lysol, before doing two treatments of a foam cleaner. He allowed me to spray the first time since I have a phobia of controlling everything.
When we first started shopping for our place, one of my favorite finds was this 10 vintage lamp I found at the last minute before leaving the store. Then I saw the cutest gumball machine that went really well in our movie section. Some of you asked how I cleaned these items as well? It was easy. I used warm soap and water then I basically went right after with some lemonwood cleaner. I filled the gumball machine two days later, so there was no chemical smell left behind from cleaning.

In conclusion: Buying used, second-hand thrifted items is no longer looked upon as dirty. To me, it is like being a kid in the candy store. I love going thrifting and finding those hidden treasures that look expensive, and yet I paid half the cost. Buying clothes second hand is not only good for our environment and community. It is also a way to find an unusual style that elevates the confidence of the weird and funky side of a woman. Let's just say it's cool to thrift. Not to mention, when I buy furniture and my odds and ends, I am almost guaranteed no one else will have it. And the best part about thrift to me is finding things that build up a happy home. :)
There you have it a few of my thrift bits and favorites. Which one do you love?
